Weezer Performs at NADA Show in Dallas

June 5, 2023

Weezer-Perfomance-Capital-One-NADA-Show-Dallas-Onstage-Systems-Event-Production
Onstage Systems returned to Gilley’s early this year, excited to deliver another killer show. This one was a private concert featuring the iconic band Weezer. The band was here to perform exclusively for the National Automobile Dealers Association during their 2023 annual show in Dallas.

And yes, Weezer captivated the audience as expected with their high-energy music, unique sound, and mind-blowing spectacle for the NADA post-convention-day mixer. And it was made possible with the support of Onstage Systems.

The lucky eventgoers got a special treat as Weezer unveiled their debut performance of the cover song “California Girls” by the Beach Boys. It was a special test run with an audience before the band would later perform the hit as part of the tribute to the Beach Boys at this year’s Grammy Awards. The night was unforgettable, filled with incredible music that resonated with the energized crowd. We can sum the event up as the perfect blend of entertainment and camaraderie, with a fun-filled atmosphere for all.

During their electrifying performance, Weezer thrilled the appreciative crowd with a phenomenal setlist showcasing their timeless hits and memorable cover songs. The night kicked off with beloved tunes such as “Beverly Hills” and “My Name Is Jonas.” The band continued to surprise the audience with their version of B.o.B’s “Magic” and Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.”

Other tunes belted out from this unforgettable setlist were:

  • Undone – The Sweater Song
  • Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus
  • Pork and Beans (with “1 More Hit” intro)
  • Take on Me by (A-ha cover)
  • Africa by Toto
  • California Girls” by the Beach Boys (live debut)
  • Island in the Sun
  • Say It Ain’t So
For the epic encore, the band concluded the fun-packed evening with their timeless hit, “Buddy Holly,” leaving the entire audience in awe and cheering for more. Yes, it was a night everyone will remember, that’s for sure, and here’s how we helped it happen.

As an acclaimed audio-visual company, we take great pride in our rock-solid partnership with The Event Nerd team. They trust us to bring their wild and imaginative ideas to life with our creative solutions and flawless execution. And that’s achievable thanks to the Onstage Systems unstoppable team. Our people poured hearts and souls into this project —like all projects before it—in their relentless obsession for perfection. And we can honestly say that Gilley’s event was off the charts! Yeah, we nailed it, just like we always do.

Onstage Systems knows a thing or two about a thing or two when asked to create lasting memories at events. In this case, we strategically placed attention-grabbing LED walls around Gilley’s complex. Our cutting-edge digital displays created an incredible opportunity for the sponsor Capital One activations. In fact, they stole the show, exposing the backer’s branding with a dynamic and visually hypnotic flair. But that’s not all!

We decided to move things up another notch by going beyond the standard offerings. Our team designed intricate hardware and lighting installations that were nothing less than awe-inspiring. This setup guaranteed seamless integration of the client’s branding and decor, blending in beautifully with the overall aesthetics. Best of all, our work here added to the experience without distracting the focus from the event and its sponsors, but it wasn’t without a few challenges.

Our biggest challenge was to create an elaborate setup within a tight 24-hour timeframe. And that meant there had to be faultless coordination across multiple departments, right. Our job was to bring together diverse elements to craft a truly extraordinary experience—so that’s exactly what we did. It took extensive preparation, pre-rigged GT trusses, meticulous design work, and efficient prefabrication. Well…. our skilled and dedicated tech crew pulled off this seemingly impossible task within a single day.

So, Onstage Systems rose to the occasion and tackled the event’s challenges head-on with our imaginative solutions—as we always do. The strategies and techniques used demanded custom fabrication, showcasing how we never back down when off-the-shelf remedies for problems aren’t on the table.

Despite the time constraints, we achieved a stunning, unforgettable arrangement that exceeded all expectations. It’s moments like these that remind us why we love doing what we do. That is, to turn ambitious visions into extraordinary realities, regardless of constraints.

Our love for live event production is easy for all to see in our work. It’s why our partners and clients trust us to bring event ideas to life with creative solutions and flawless execution.

The Capricorn Drive-In at Fair Park

October 14, 2020

The Capricorn Drive-In hosted a four week series of music, film, and performance in Dallas at Fair Park. As part of the #SociallyDistantSummerSeries, the event was held Fridays and Saturdays, from August 28th to September 5th.

Capricorn Drive-In Featured Performers

  • Colab
  • Cure of Paranoia
  • DJ Don Gentry & Wayward

  • Infamists & Static Creatures

The event had the distinction of being Dallas’s first COVID-19 safe public concert approved by the City of Dallas. It was created to highlight the talent of Texas musicians and performers. The four-week Fair Park event was the culmination of 14 weeks of planning. Great effort was placed on creating a COVID-19 safe, live event experience.

COVID-19 Considerations

To be approved by the City of Dallas, Onstage Systems needed to develop a safety plan with attendee management as priority number one. Onstage Systems created a parking diagram with designated attendee sitting areas following COVID-19 distancing guidelines. Automobiles were spaced 30 feet from the stage with safe, designated sitting areas to the front and left of automobiles. Attendees were encouraged to tailgate from their automobiles or sit in the designated areas on blankets and picnic chairs.

Other considerations included organizing high traffic areas like toilet facilities and coordinating the cleaning crew for high-traffic area sanitization.

Visual Messaging

Part of the safety plan was creating a visual messaging strategy for COVID-19 safety protocols. Informing attendees of the protocols was paramount. The visual messaging solution encouraged attendees to adjust their behaviors to keep live events live and for attendees to be part of the solution. Security at the event also enforced COVID-19 safety protocols.

Backstage Safety

Working crew, bands, and other performers were all temperature checked upon arrival. Additionally, all working crew, bands, and performers were required to wear masks when within 10 feet of others.

Onstage Systems – COVID-Safe Dallas Event Production

Onstage Systems coordinated the event with local bands and the managers of national talent to bring The Capricorn Drive-In at Fair Park all together. In addition to coordination, Onstage Systems provided video , lighting and audio production. The audio solution for the drive-in event included live public address system sound and the inclusion of an FM transmitter for attendees to listen through their automobile stereos. In addition to live performances, Onstage Systems live-streamed select performances from the event online to virtual audiences.

Onstage Systems is proud to have been a part of bringing live events back to Dallas with the City’s first approved, COVID-19 safe public concert. We would also like to thank our event partners that helped to make The Capricorn Drive-In at Fair Park a success.

Audio Visual Production for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra

September 10, 2019

Our company has a very interesting history with the DSO.  It began in 1980 at the Fair Park Music Hall, which at the time was the home for the orchestra.  This relationship started with the founder of our company, Charles Belcher. We provided audio, engineering, and backline support for all pop artists that have performed with the symphony.

The relationship was taken to a new level early on in 1982 when we were chosen to be the sound company for the DSO's summer home at "Starfest".  This was a huge step for both the DSO and our company. We provided a sound system for a 15,000 seat outdoor venue. This system stayed in place for two months during June and July for several years of Starfest.

The relationship continued through the years with Russell Purdue, who has been an integral fixture with the company for over 30 years. We were also there to support DSO with the opening of their new home at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in 1989, when they performed with Johnny Mathis and Leontyne Price.  We continue to support DSO in this manner to date.

In 2012, Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Onstage Systems partnered again to open Klyde Warren Park in 2012 accompanying Jackie Evancho.  This has created yet another partnership at Klyde Warren Park with the Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation.

We may have a new name, new gear, and new engineers, but the heart of that relationship remains.  This is due to Russell’s high standard of excellence and customer service to this and all other clients that give us the honor of working with us.  As Russell transitions to retirement, the third generation of Onstage is charged with taking the helm and continuing the tradition of service and passion with the Symphony.

Symphonic concerts at the Meyerson, Christmas performances, as well as the Summer Series of Concerts are the hallmark of this extensive relationship.  Artists of varying disciplines have played with this masterful ensemble of performers from Erykah Badu, Leslie Odom, Jr., Wynton Marsalis, and Chris Botti, just to name a few recent indoor engagements. With the introduction of our Stageline SL320, the DSO now has consistency in their performance space in the ever-challenging outdoor environment.

Our family at DSO continues to provide their symphonic artistry to Dallas.  If you look about 90 feet in front of the stage, you will see a member of Onstage providing the amplification to yet another tremendous performance!
